Peter Kay's 'Carshare'
Acclaimed comedian Peter Kay once rideshared with a co-worker; an experience which led to the creation of his BAFTA award-winning BBC sitcom ‘Car Share’.
The hit series hit iPlayer and then our TV screens in May 2015, and demonstrates how the Sharing Economy is become hugely popular in everyday life.
The show sees supermarket assistant manager John, (Kay) and his colleague Kayleigh, (Sian Gibson) join their work's car share scheme. Although very different people, a wonderful friendship develops as the show unfolds.
“The idea of two people car sharing to work each day really appealed to me,” says Kay. “It highlights the comedy in the minutia of the daily trek and allows the spiralling conversations of life to unwind in all of their glory.”
Series 2 of Carshare is due to start filming in summer 2016, and Sian Gibson has been quoted as saying that there’s loads of ideas floating around for the new episodes. Will John and Kayleigh finally get together? Watch this space.
Peter Kay isn’t the only comedy actor interested in liftsharing. Robert Llewellyn (of Red Dwarf and Scrapheap Challenge fame) has a YouTube series called Carpool, Jerry Seinfeld has recorded many episodes of his online show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, and James Corden is becoming well known for interviewing A List celebrities as he gives them a ride to work!
